Three Google Updates That Matter for Local Businesses This Month

August brought three meaningful updates from Google that every local business owner and marketing agency should understand. None of them are dramatic on their own — but together, they paint a clear picture of where Google is taking local search.

Update 1: Google Refreshes Its Local Ranking Documentation

Google updated its official documentation on how local search results are ranked. While the core factors remain the same — Relevance, Distance, and Prominence — the updated documentation provides more clarity on what each factor means in practice.

Relevance now explicitly includes the quality and completeness of your Google Business Profile, not just keyword matching. A business with a fully optimized profile that clearly describes its services will rank higher than a competitor with a vague or incomplete listing.

Distance remains straightforward — how far is the business from the searcher's location? But Google notes that when a user doesn't specify a location, it will use what it knows about their location from their device.

Prominence is the most nuanced factor and the one most influenced by your broader digital marketing efforts. Google defines prominence as how well-known a business is — based on information from across the web, including links, articles, directories, and reviews.

The IYM Takeaway: Prominence is where most local businesses have the most room to improve. Building local prominence requires a systematic approach — press coverage, directory citations, community partnerships, and a consistent review strategy. This is exactly what the CSD Framework's Strategic Sourcing and Implementation phases address.

Update 2: GBP Launches "Check Edit Status" Feature

Google Business Profile now includes a "Check Edit Status" feature that allows business owners to see the status of pending edits to their listing — whether they're under review, approved, or rejected.

Previously, edits to GBP listings would disappear into a black box. You'd make a change, wait, and either see it reflected or not — with no explanation. The new status tracking brings much-needed transparency to the process.

Why This Matters:

  • You can now identify when Google has rejected an edit and understand why
  • You can track how long reviews are taking for specific types of changes
  • You can prioritize which edits to pursue and which to approach differently

Common reasons Google rejects GBP edits:

  • Business name includes keywords that aren't part of the actual business name
  • Category changes that don't match the business's primary service
  • Address changes that don't match the verified business location
  • Description content that violates GBP guidelines (promotional language, URLs, etc.)

Update 3: Google Prompts Businesses to Add WhatsApp Numbers

Google is now actively prompting businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their Google Business Profiles. This integration allows customers to message businesses directly through WhatsApp from the GBP listing.

For businesses that already use WhatsApp for customer communication, this is a straightforward win — it reduces friction for customers who prefer messaging over calling.

The Strategic Consideration:

Adding a WhatsApp number to your GBP creates a new customer communication channel that needs to be actively managed. An unanswered WhatsApp message is worse than no WhatsApp integration at all — it signals to potential customers that you're unresponsive.

Before adding WhatsApp to your GBP, ensure you have:

  • A dedicated WhatsApp Business account (not a personal number)
  • A team member responsible for monitoring and responding to messages
  • Response time expectations set (WhatsApp Business allows you to set an "away" message)
  • A process for routing WhatsApp inquiries to the appropriate team member

The Bigger Picture: Google Is Raising the Bar for Local Business Profiles

These three updates share a common thread: Google is making it easier for businesses to maintain accurate, complete, and engaging profiles — and harder for businesses that don't invest in their digital presence to remain competitive.

The "Check Edit Status" feature rewards businesses that actively manage their listings. The WhatsApp integration rewards businesses that invest in customer communication. The updated ranking documentation rewards businesses that build genuine local prominence.

The businesses that treat their Google Business Profile as a living marketing asset — not a set-it-and-forget-it directory listing — will continue to gain ground on competitors who don't.
